Notes from the Autoimmune Summit
This is not a transcript but cliff notes I took listening to the summits. The speakers are doctors, nutritionists and specialists in their field of health that practice functional medicine. These are not your normal health and diet tips but the medical reasons you may be experiencing problems and how to fix it. It has been found that with autoimmune diseases your body is NOT attacking itself but attacking cells that have been subtly damaged and are now foreigners. Elevated sugar causes hemoglobin to react and changes it into a hemoglobin that doesn’t look like itself anymore, albumin changes also. This causes the immune system to treat them like invaders that they need to attack with antibodies. Certain drugs cause autoimmune reactions by becoming intolerant to them, after a while. It does this by damaging cells in the body that are no longer recognized by the immune system as you.
Your body becomes more intolerant to foreign substances (cells) creating hypersensitive reactions. Your environment has made changes in your host tissue and how your immune system reacts. NO autoimmune disease is caused by any one gene. You must treat the cause not the effect, what is causing these genes to be turned on. Environmental modulators effect what genes will be expressed.
The phenol family is found to be inducing autoimmune diseases these are: heavy metals, gluten, arsenic, medications, rancid fats, chronic infections, processed food, sugar, fried foods, charred foods and nutrient deficiencies of folic acid, B12, B6, and D. Clean up your diet and environment.
The Cleveland Clinic is now offering functional medicine and all aspects of functional medicine is now being discussed by universities and big pharma. They are working on designing individual protocols based on epigenetics. We are moving toward health based medicine and away from the sick based model.

There are two kinds of immune systems innate and acquired. Innate does not require prior exposure to bacteria only molecular structure or damaged cells to go into action. It looks for the presence of dangerous strangers. Acquired responds and builds to exposure, innate defends and repairs damage. Everyone has mild low grade autoimmune conditions, it’s when transient autoimmune phenomenon all the time with a sustained assault over a long period of months to years that pushes the immune system over the brink.
All biopsies cause raised antibody levels to come to destroy damaged cells (transient) and defend and repair. With chronic inflammation you must find and stop the source. There could be a one time occurrence if the virus/bacteria is strong enough vs the chronic assault, long term medications are included in the cause of chronic assault. Gluten is at the top of the list for inflammation and triggering autoimmune, IBS and Crohn’s. Intestinal infections, statins, environmental toxins and medications are very high on the list.
Perchlorate used to be used as hypothyroid medicine now it’s found on crops like lettuce because it’s now used as an additive to rocket fuel by the military. Military bases are surrounded by a lot of flat land and fields of mostly lettuce as they take off and land this get on the crops.
Endocrinologists are jumping on board to functional medicine faster than other fields of medicine.
Estriol is being tested in trials as a cure finding that it’s working for Multiple Sclerosis when used as a cream.
Avoid plastics and pesticides, if you wouldn’t eat it don’t put it on your skin. Good things that help: omega 3, GLA, evening primrose oil, borage, black current, turmeric (curcumin) plus black pepper and a fat combined, frankincense, sulforaphane (broccoli seeds) and matcha tea.
Inflammatory diet plus triggers equals autoimmune disease.

Autoimmune diseases are now an epidemic. Diet is number one then toxins, stress, infections and toxic mold. Do a nutrient assessment, in general you need a good multivitamin, fish oil, probiotic and vitamin D. If your sick the biggest detoxifier of the body is glutathione we use IV glutathione or pre-cursers including NAC, glycine, magnesium, vit C alpha lipoic acid, milk thistle and high dose B vitamins. We have many success stories for Parkinson’s using glutathione.
The power of just changing your diet is enormous.

There are 80 different autoimmune diseases making it the leading chronic disease. Each autoimmune patient has a different cause which needs a different protocol to reverse. Modern doctor’s don’t normally diagnose autoimmune correctly until it’s in the end stage, Functional Medicine catches it much sooner. A large problem with modern medicine is going to different doctors for each problem when they all have the same cause. An FM doctor would diagnose and treat you correctly with more choices of treatment that work and are non-invasive and tailored specifically for you.

Remove gluten, get sugar under control, support your brain with healthy fats (fats are essential), healthy Vit D levels with A and K2, omega 3’s EPA and DHA, enhanced glutathione, NO table salt and eat organic to avoid pesticides.

Autoimmune begins as leaky gut, we cannot break down and digest gluten amino acids. Gluten can induce permeability in everyone, take away gluten and healing begins. Gluten is nutritionally useless. The gut communicates with it’s environment. Leaky gut is large particles passing through the space in between cells and some doctors say leaky gut doesn’t even exist. They are working on a drug Zonulin but it’s not ready for human’s yet.
These diseases effect industrialized countries because we are too clean and no longer being exposed to everything we need to build a strong immune system. We changed our environment faster than our bodies could keep up, gluten, chemicals, C-sections are causes plus infections and extreme stress. The more China westernizes the faster diseases previously unknown to them are becoming epidemic.
Personalized and preventative medicine is a must.
Diet, eat local, fresh and diversified. Avoid antibiotics and C-section only if absolutely necessary. Modern medicine needs to have an open mind for an exchange of ideas.
If you have something that won’t resolve itself with either medications or natural means you need to test for leaky gut.

Hundreds have reversed autoimmune on a paleo diet, also arthritis, lupus and narcolepsy is autoimmune and fixed with correcting vit D levels.
If you have an autoimmune disease you must get off gluten and possibly dairy, legumes, millet, nightshade vegetables, nut’s and seeds and eggs. Some also need to peal some vegetables and fruits and take out fruit seeds. Eat clean meats, fish, vegetables and fruit, tubers are the most nutrient dense, adding grains and legumes lowers the nutrient value.
Get sun for vit D, exercise and sleeping well helps with healing and recovery.
